supplies

plant-based candles have been around for a few years now and when we first researched how to responsibly produce a natural candle, we were blown away to see such variety when it comes to choosing your components. However, as you aim to use natural products, you may find it hard to tick all the boxes to remain 100% sustainable.

our wax is made of soy and many other candle makers have chosen this alternative to paraffin – a petroleum-derived wax. Soy wax is the most popular substitute, it is pretty easy to find and provides great quality results. The wax is derived from the soybean and its vegetable oil is turned into solid granules. Other plant-based substitutes include rapeseed wax, coconut wax and even beeswax. Whilst plant-based cultivations remain more sustainable over the oil and coal industry, they are often criticised for damaging soils and encouraging deforestation. Although, if we look at most commercialised and affordable candles, not only their paraffin wax candles are highly dangerous for your health, their high-street presence support a harmful and polluting industry. We’ve decided to avoid purchasing soy wax manufactured in the UE and opted for a supplier based in the UK which manufactures in Lancashire.
As we’ve just launched, we’re still researching and testing out all sorts of plant-based waxes and we’re committed to using the best alternative ticking all boxes.

our wicks are either made of cotton & paper braided or rosewood. Once again, the majority of wicks are pre-coated in paraffin wax, hence we’ve opted for a wick made of cotton and paper braided altogether. It simply leaves less debris in the candle and barely produces smoke and soot. Renowned for their relaxing crackling noise, wooden wicks have rapidly seen their popularity increased. Beware, it’s easy to get tricked with wooden wicks, you will want to know where the wood is coming from. We’ve tested several wicks when developing our candles range and we were very disappointed to learn that they were made out of palm trees. With catastrophic deforestation consequences, the palm industry was definitely not a go-to option to consider using wooden wicks. Instead, we’ve opted for rosewood which offers great burning quality results and a lovely woody smell.

our scents are made of essential and fragrance oils. Most commercialised scented products are made with fragrance oils – you find them in laundry softener, perfume and even beauty products. Fragrance oils are simply designed to recreate scents by mixing synthetic aromas. Less cost-effective than essential oils, fragrance oils are also known to hold a stronger scent. To moderate the use of chemical components, we’ve decided to exclusively use paraben, silicone, CMRs (cancerogenic chemicals) and phthalates free fragrance oils. For those sensitive to strong scents, we’ve also developed aromatherapy candles with essential oils. Having used essential oils to treat common colds and infections, to energise in the morning and even to ease muscle pain, we were looking forward to developing candles with olfactory therapy reliefs. Our essential oils are 100% natural and guaranteed GMO-free. Both fragrance and essential oils including their components have not been tested on animals.

design

it isn’t always easy to stand out when tons of independent candle makers have been using similar-looking containers, a glued square shape sticker and a very much alike scents selection.

our containers are made of thick, heat-resistant glass and are externally painted in matte colour. Most importantly and before looking at what’s in the candle, we’ve aimed to choose a sophisticated, yet discreet container that would fit in everyone’s interior. Obsessed with minimalist design, we focused on developing a container that wouldn’t catch the eye instantly. We believe that the monochrome colour palette has now regained the trend in interior design, so when it came to choosing colours - we rapidly agreed on black, white and grey. With regard to labelling the container, a traditional branded sticker wasn’t particularly something we were keen on. It simply meant printing additional single-use paper and quite frankly most candles have stickers on their containers so we thought we’d do things differently. Considering the nature of the wax, we rapidly figured that reusing the container was an obvious alternative once the candle used. Therefore, in line with keeping the container minimalist looking, we’ve decided to use water-based paint. Each candle has been hand-painted in matte colour and once you’re done with the candle, should you want to reuse the container, you’re free to wash it up and give it a brand new life (plant pot, pens holder, coffee cup…etc). Otherwise, please do recycle when allowed by the local authority.

packaging

lastly, given the consciousness around the supplies we use and the design we’ve chosen, it is important we ensure the candle doesn’t come with polluting packaging.

all our packaging is guaranteed plastic-free and is either made of recycled fibre or, can be recycled. We gave up the traditional plastic-made packaging tape and opted for one made of natural fibres. To avoid the use of branded stickers, you will notice our logo stamped (everywhere we could) with soy-based ink. Regarding the famous bubble wrap we’ve all played with, it is known to be made using plastic polymer film which sadly takes hundreds of years to disintegrate so we’ve opted for a paper-made one instead. Ultimately, we do receive lots of cardboard with our supplies so we thought we would shred all that and transform it into parcel filling material.
